Lutel James one of the driving forces behind Chapeltown Football Youth Development Centre; Lutel is a former professional Footballer who has taken his life experiences and is giving back to the community in a positive way.
Jillian Liburd Officially Jillian is the Seclusion Manager at Roundhay High School; unofficially, she is a Mother figure to many of the Black (and non-Black) children at the school. She is supportive, encouraging and goes that extra mile for anyone who needs it.
Terence Holness A 2nd nomination for T who was runner-up in this category last year. A recent campaign showed how much the community recognizes the work that T has done over the years, and continues to do.
BEST BAND
Stone Roots Last years winners in this category, probably the best collection of musicians that this community has produced. They have backed more International and local artists than there is room to list, and continue to represent Leeds positively.
New World Steel Orchestra Originally formed by Arthur France, New World have represented Yorkshire in front of Royalty; and not only do they teach the art of the pan, they also help to prepare their groups of young people for the wider world by widening their experiences. Arthur, his daughter Asha and the NWSO committee are leading these young people to greater heights.
BEST LIVE PERFORMER
Ashriel James more popularly known as Asher Don this young man has been in the game for more than a minute. He was one of the original Leeds Young Authors and has been building beats since his infancy. Some of his productions have featured on BBC 1xtra and his lyrical and production skills have grown immeasurably.
Khadijah Ibrahim - Khadijah is a published poet, playwright and director. She is the mentor and driving force behind Leeds Young Authors. She has forged links between the UK and the USA that will prove to be invaluable to our community for years to come via the annual Poetry Slam in America. In addition, she is one our most potent community speakers.
Westen MC Last years winner of this category; despite criticism from some quarters, this Brother is one of the hardest working MCs on the circuit. From being a shy youngster, he now has the confidence and swagger that befits his title of Best Live Performer of 2009

COMMUNITY HERO
Katrina Wright a real everyday hero who took over the care of her sisters three children after her untimely passing. Katrina has taken on this role as well as her own responsibilities with an unflinching and determined attitude, which deserves nothing but our praise and Love.
Brian Swarray more popularly known as Barber B, Brian started his business empire from humble beginnings; initially cutting peoples hair in their homes. He moved on to having a salon on Roundhay Road and now has a prestigious establishment in the city centre which is also a hair academy.
Add to this that he is a more than willing mentor to the young and a giving contributor to community initiatives.
Hugh Gooding - To some it would seem a strange choice to see the owner of a Funeral Service nominated as a Community Hero, however, this man has shown a sensitivity for his craft and a determination to build his business that can only be commended. His Business is only the 2nd of its kind (Black Owned) in the UK and anyone who has used his service has had nothing but extreme praise.

LEEDS YOUNG AUTHORS
Founded in 2003 LYA promotes positive social dialogue through the written and spoken word. LYA has given young people the opportunity to promote their words through forums like poetry slams, most notably the Brave New Voices poetry slam and Literary Festival in the USA.
This is a world renowned event at which young people representing Leeds came 2nd in 2009, a remarkable feat considering the calibre of the competition and great testimony to their talent.
Sadly, one of their members (Diane Cheng R.I.P.) passed away recently; this award is a fitting tribute to her, and all those involved in LYA and to the contribution they are making to the community AND the City of Leeds.
